Default Hello from Waterford CT!

Hey Guys,

Glad to be part of the forum. Long time fresh water (large mouth) guy new to the surf-casting scene. Been fishing in Niantic and Waterford CT areas. I have landed some nice blues and some decent stripers in the past week but mostly schoolies.

Just thought I would introduce myself. I am hoping to get some knowledge from fellow forumites and share when I can!

Welcome to the board. Waterford and Niantic areas are some of my favorite spots in CT to fish. I stopped over at Harkness last week and was disappointed to find the outflow of the salt pond had closed up completely, this was my favorite spot to fish.

I have been heading to Rocky Neck just about every night for the past week. I've pulled in some decent stripers in the 20" range and a really nice blue last night along with 2 small schoolies. Going to head to Harkness over the weekend or possibly pleasure beach. Let me know if you want to meet up sometime. I would love to learn more from some experienced casters.

Not sure if I qualify as experienced...but... I had my best striper ever from Harkness this year, 30lbs, back in July. I fished Rocky Neck the first year I was into surfcasting but it was mostly during the day when I didn't know what I was doing and had to pay and deal with hordes of people. When do you fish there, at night? DO they charge at night? I'll let you know when I'm gonna be down on the shore in that area definately. I'm gonna be at a buddy's beach house at Misquamecut (sp?) next week though, fishing from there.

Thanks guys!

Hit 3 different local spots last night. No luck. I am primarily fishing from 5:30 or so until 9:00. Let me know if anyone wants to meet up.

I go in to Rocky Neck on the giants neck side and walk in. My friend lives in Giants neck heights. A ranger came out 2 nights ago and said there was no fishing after 7:00 there. I thought that was strange as their signs say "no entry after 7:00 unless fishing". It was dead there last night. Only saw one school or blues.

Matt You probably need a state pass for night fishing. Ask at the ranger station next time your there or call ahead and ask.

Matt, not sure if you are surfcasting or fly rodding. If using the fly rod I fish often at Harkness and have had really good luck with a green and white clouser, size 2 with a bead chain instead of dumbell eyes. I also use an intermediate line. Take care and welcome.

Hey Dave,

I am currently just surf casting. I haven't picked up a fly rod in 10+ years. I hope to get into it once I get in the swing of things with casting.

Maybe I'll run into you at Harkness sometime!

Matt this from the Ct. DEP.

If you mean Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic, CT then yes, you would need a Night fishing permit during the Parks season (starts after Memorial Day and runs through September 30th, this year). To obtain the permit, stop at the Ticket booth at the Park's entrance after 6:00pm and request a night fishing permit. The Ranger at the gate will issue you a permit for the evening. You must have fishing gear with you to obtain the permit and you must be using fishing with it once you are in the Park or the Officer on patrol will evict you from the Park.
After September 30th, the entrance to the Park is gated and locked shut at night so there is no access to Rocky Neck.

Thank you for your email, I hope this information is helpful to you.

Sincerely,

Susan D'Agostino
CT DEP

Thanks a ton Jim. I have been accessing from the other side on Giants Neck beach because a buddy lives there. So does this mean after September 30th no one can fish there?

From what she says Matt it appears the park closes at night after Sept. 30th. Maybe you should talk to the Ranger at the gate before Sunday and see if there is any other access.

I talked with him this evening and he said they will not be monitoring the beach after October 11th.

The whole thing is just confusing. They have never done this before.
