Hey dude, the orange thing you refered to is a small float used to keep the bait off the bottom. You knew that.. The float doesnt seem to spook the fish. Dont put it right next to the hook, about a third the way down the leader toward the hook. Bigger baits you might need to put it closer to the hook, lighter baits you might want to go farther away.. The best way to find out which setting works for you is to put the weighted baited rig on your pole and in a few feet of water, see how the baited hook reacts with the float then you'll see, move the float toward or away from the hook.. I never use those floats, I get the same results with a surf type rig, from the sinker up is, sinker, 2-3 feet of mono, with 1 knot tied a couple of inches above the weight. The line will break at the knot if you get snagged, and you wont loose your rig. to a 3 way swivel, your main line goes to the second loop on the swivel, then a 2 foot or so leader with a hook to the 3rd eye on the swivel. You probably knew that rig.. Hope that helped, Chuck

If you get the big quohog clams in the shell soak them in a bucket of salt water to toughen them up. Slice the shell from the back to cut the musle so they open real easy. Sew your hook through the tougher edges of the clam. Ask your tackle shop for clam string or use dental floss. Forget the garlic.

Clam string works well to help keep frozen herring on, too.

This sounds funny but womans panty hose, cut into 3-4-5 inch squares, 1 peice, wrapped around the clam, draw all 4 corners togther, tie with some string, no bows, hook thru once so it will hang, or imbed the hook. The panty hose is stronger then the clam, small fish cant steal your bait, them trying to get the bait will only disperse scent, like a chum bag, it retains scent, and when the big one sucks it in she wont feel the panty hose around the clam. And you can make up the baits as your line is in the water, salt them use scent, soak the bags of clam or hearing or whatever. Good luck, Chuck
