Default Does size really matter?

According to my wife, no... but what the hell does she know?! I'm talking about the size of my pole, uh I mean rod I mean fishing pole.(allright enough of that) When fishing off a boat does it matter how big the rod is? For example: 3 poles each good for between 15-25 lbs. rod A is 5'6'' rod B is 7' rod C is 8'. Which do you go with? Is there really a difference? Someone help me.

well when i was in Hawaii last year. We used 5' and smaller for Mahi Mahi and Wahoo. On the charter boat we went out on for Stripers and Blues we used 6' + rods. I guess it would have to go with what type of fishing you are doing. For the Mahi mahi and Wahoo we were trolling. For the stripers and Blues we were jigging.

On Party bouts for Stripers and Blues I use a 5'6" rod with 50lb. It tends to save my rigs when the lines get tangled.

My two cents.

That helps but now that brings me to another problem. I want to fish for stripers, blues and fluke. Most of my reels are rigged with 20 - 25 lbs and one I have one Senator set up with 30lbs. Is that even good enough? Bear in mind, although I have a boat I don't plan on going too far offshore at least not until I get more familiar with things.

Your line should be fine. I use heavy line on party boats where lines tend to get tangled alot. 30lb will be fine. You could use the 20 if there are not alot of people on your boat. By alot I mean over 6. LOL.

Cheech, You might want to lighten up for the Fluke. I use 10 to 12# line on a medium weight 7' rod on my boat. If I'm feeling frisky I'll use my llight weight rod and 8# test.

I also have 3 spinners set with 10-15lb line. So I think I have all the right gear and at least now I know what pole to use for what. Thanks guys
