Despite science showing that predators are in trouble, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission has never implemented regulations to protect spawning menhaden from the industrial, Chesapeake Bay-based company known as Omega Protein.
Omega has been doing everything possible to prevent the implementation of a total allowable catch. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, they maintain that menhaden are merely suffering from poor recruitment – their half billion pound harvest has nothing to do with it. They want to continue grinding up menhaden into fishmeal and oil, and shipping most of it overseas, to Europe and Asia.
Don’t let them get away with it! The menhaden population is in trouble. Recognizing we have a problem is the first step. Send your message today and ask the ASMFC to set a limit on how the menhaden catch– for the first time ever.
