I just wanted to clarify that I did not post just to sell gear. If you have any questions about what size to use or how to use effectively i would like to help. I have been taking herring out of the Hudson River for Striper bait for over 15 years. Like anything else you learn over time those little things that make a big difference in your success.

Just an FYI...you don't have your phone number listed on the Craigslist ad.

Speaking of scap nets, has anyone experimented with rubberized netting? Given how fragile herring can be, the sort of silicone mesh used in modern landing nets might reduce scale loss and slime coat damage. Assuming one could find a section large enough to span a scap rig that is.

Thanks for the heads up on the craigslist phone #. AS for rubberized netting is concerned it creates too much drag and is unnessary..the biggest thing @ handling herring is dont..I take them out of my scapnet with a smaller net ant put them in a livewell. I take them out of the livewell with a small net and put them in a 5 gal bucket with water. The only time I handle them is to take them out of the bucket and put them on the hook. Pristine bait!

I dont take them out of livewell untill I need them.I place the bucket with the herring in it directly next to my rod and actually hook them in the bucket. Then I take up the slack and cast. Works great. Less time out of the water and less stress on the bait.

Having a net with too much belly is also a problem. You end up scraping the herring trying to get them out of the scap net. A net with smaller belly allows me to actually bounce the herring up and place the net underneath it without damaging the bait. If you have to put a rock in the netting to keep it down it has TOO MUCH BELLY.

I bought one of John's 4x4 tarred nets and received it Monday. It looks pretty good! The netting is smaller in diameter than I'm used to seeing but the smaller diameter should make lifting easier due to less resistance in the water. The size of the holes seems good too. Big enough to let the water easily pass through but not so big that smaller herring will get caught in it. I showed it to my girlfriend's cousin and I'm pretty sure it's no longer going to be mine. Lol! I plan on ordering a 5x5 tarred from John very soon. The transaction was easy and he warranties his nets for a year so really there's nothing to lose.

Awesome. I'd like to get a 5x5 myself.

looking at NYS DEC regs: " (i) No person shall take anadromous river herring with a net within Hudson River tributaries and embayments (d) with a scap, or lift, net exceeding 16 square feet"

- Doesn't that mean a scap net bigger than 4' x 4' would be illegal ??

ANY netting of herring in the creeks is prohibited.

A 5 by 5 net is illegal can only be 4 by 4 I built mine just under 48 inches because of this reg I personally like 42in by 42in

That's not totally true. A Scap license allows you to use up to a 10x10 net. But only in the river itself. No netting in the creeks I believe.

And personally when the herring are in if you can't get them with a 4ft net your doing something wrong I can get up to 5 or 6 in my 42 by 42 and I forgot about the bait license that is true but regular fishermen and fisher women may not use bigger than 48in by 48in
