Default 2008 NJ Tackle Shop Reports

Capt. Chris Gatley of the Ardent Angler Guide Service, Milford, N.J. (267-253-5290): says the Delaware River is still cold, but smallmouth bass fishing is pretty good on sunny days …fish are taking suspending jerkbaitsÂ…walleye fishing on southern stretched of the river has slowed as spawn is winding down or perhaps completely over …shad have been caught in good numbers around Yardley and New Hope in recent days with fish taking suspending jerkbaits. The walleye fishing down south on the river has slowed as the spawn is in full swing or even over. The good news is that shad were caught in good numbers in Yardley and New Hope in recent days …striped bass and herring also are being caught, but not in any great numbers …striper fishing on Raritan Bay is slow, but anglers are catching decent numbers of flounder using clams and mussels around chum slicks.

North Jersey: The Tackle Box in Hazlet (732-264-7711) Striped bass fishing was excellent at Cliffwood Beach on Wednesday evening, with more than 50 fish up to 11 pounds taken on clams and sandworms …shop expects even larger fish to move into area soon …boaters in Raritan Bay are catching up to 25 keeper flounder a day …best action is coming for those putting out heavy chum slicks.

Brielle Region: Brielle Tackle (732-528-5720) Flounder are providing the best bite locally …boaters report catching decent numbers of keepers around Mantoloking Bridge during outgoing tides …best action is coming for those putting out large chum slicks and then baiting their rigs with sandworms or bloodworms …large schools of bunker and other baitfish have shown up in Raritan Bay, but there are still no sizeable schools of striped bass chasing them.

Little Egg Inlet: Scott's Bait & Tackle (609-296-1300) Scottie says March was a lousy month for striper fishing …but the fish showed up this Monday, and anglers are catching up to 19 fish per day at Graveling PointÂ…worms and clams both working …8-pound keeper was weighed in at shop Thursday morning …tautog action should pick up later this month.

Seaside Park: Betty & Nicks Bait & Tackle (732-793-2708) Plenty of short striped bass being caught locally, but keepers just haven't shown up yet …flounder action is only so-so, due to cold, windy weather …warmer temperatures are needed to make flounder more active and bring larger stripers into the area.

Ship Bottom: Fishermen's Headquarters (609-494-5739) says things are fairly slow, with relatively few anglers on the water …a few short striped bass are being caught, along with fair numbers of flounder in the bay.

Rehoboth Beach, Del.: Old Inlet Bait & Tackle (302-227-7974) says some keeper striped bass were caught from Indian River Inlet this week …all fish being taken on bucktails or swim shads …a few stripers also being caught along the beach …tautog action is decent in the inlet …live green crabs are enticing themÂ…there also is a good, early-season flounder bite in Indian River Bay …large minnows working best …big bluefish should show up along the beach within the next several weeks.
