Default Stripers vs. Blues (Belmar was attacked tonight)

I had a nice evening of fishing tonight back at my favorite Belmar beach, didn't do diddly all afternoon till the sun started to go down, and the Blues came in and we killed 'em from the jetty, I saw 40 or so bluefish up to about 40", got my share, and lost my share too, I had been plugging for stripers when the blues arrived, for each fish I caught I lost one due to bite offs. I recently put on some braid for my plugging rod, works great, but one headshake and the blue....and my lure.....are gone. :x Up till now I've just been tying the braid directly to the lures, which works great for Mr. Striper, but gets expensive when Mr. Blue shows up. What sort of rigs and leaders are folks using on their plugging setups, I'd like to hear some opinions. I eventually just tied on a mono leader after the 4th or 5th lost fish, by then the fishies were gone.
What do you use?

Also, by the time I got back to the beach to check my bait line, I just picked it up out of the spike to reel in & go home, wouldn't you know there's a striper on there, a shorty, can't wait to get back down to the beach tomorrow afternoon.

Spent quite a bit of time on the beach with Sean, and on the jetty with Jason, don't know if they read here, but Hi guys, was fun.

Hi Ed,

When the blues are around and i'm out there hunting Stripers, i just plug with a 24" steal leader clipped to a snap swivel tied to my braid. I rarely loose a plug. Where we fish off the beach in rhode island, no telling whats gonna hit ya, hence why i just fish with a leader anyway. Maybe 3 weeks ago there were Blues, Bonitas, Yellowfin, Stripers, Dogfish, and Tautog around... the only way you could tell what you had on, is if you've been fishing for awhile in your life and no how they break. The Leaders have Never affected my plugs and the way they pop or swim.

My 2 Cents

Steel leader if it's packed with blues, or 80#mono leader if it's a mix. I've caught plenty of stripers with the steel leader, but I still get concerned about the one who turned away when it saw the steel, hence the reason I use the mono more than steel.

But a month ago when I was into nothing but blues, steel it was.

Default Thanks guys.

I guess I'm off to buy some more stuff before I hit the beach today. I hope the action sticks around for a little bit longer, last night was great fun.

Sounds like a fun trip!!

I fished a jetty for the first time last week at Point Lookout, MD. It was pretty fun but wasn't where the big ones were here in MD. Biggest was about 17", caught on a 4" Opening Night Saltwater Assassin (I love that damn lure).

Totaled about 6 fish that evening, pretty fun though.
