Default Very interesting talk with biologist....

I had a chance to talk with one of the lead biologists working on the Albemarle Sound striper project yesterday. The Alb. Sound striper season was a bust this year with plenty of fish but very few keepers. So I asked him what the deal was. He said that they had been extremely worried about the population all spring but that, thankfully, the bigger fish had shown up in the last week or so.(Seasons out of course). So naturally I asked him where had the bigger fish been all spring and his answer was quite the surprise. In the ocean. Keep in mind their studies(mostly mid-late 90s) had indicated the Alb. sound population was seperate from the ocean population-the Alb. fish never the left the sound except to spawn up the Roanoke River. His explanation was that in the 90s the population was just recovering and the vast majority were under 4yr age. Now the population has a good number of older, larger fish and those fish are heading to the ocean for the run up the coast. Guess we'll have to adjust our tactics but at least the population is not in trouble.

Good to hear the population is on the mend down there. Maybe they'll open the season up a little more in a couple years. Until then, you could always take a little road trip and fish New England

BR-actually our season is fairly liberal-in fact they raised our limit to 3, 18" or over just last season. As for the road trip-man you just don't know how bad I want to get up there. I've got a chance to go end of June and the Gunny said he'd try to hook me up but the price of gas is making it fairly unlikely at this point. Some day.
