how often do you change your leader(braid to fluoro), i was fishing today and had a breakoff right there, didn't know if it was from being a few days old and many casts(like 4 or 5 hundred) old, also, what test leader would be best on 30# power pro? thanks in advance
Ryan
I change or cut back my leaders when they get a nick. I definitely change flouro if any small spots start to get a milky color, this seems to mean that a weak spot has developed.
Pound test of the leader depends on the fish. The lighter the better getting heavier as conditions warrant. fishing around rocks or when bluefish are around means 50#, fishing for schoolies in later fall or in the heat of summer means 20#. Open beaches with the chance of a big fish means I split the difference and use 30#.
Check it for nicks and replace as necessary. If I ever catch that elusive cow I will replace the leader afterwards. For now I am using 25# fluro with 30# power pro. Thanks for the info about the milky color sudsy, I didnt know that.
Good luck
Something I've noticed with fluro that must have something to do with they way its made or the material its made with: When it starts to get nicked up it starts to come of in "strings", as if a thin layer of the fluro is peeling off.
I use loop knots to attach plugs. So if i'm in the plugs changing mode, leaders go fast. But I'll always use a fresh leader every time out, if needed.
