Homemade herring tanks/barrels-

How do you guys secure the PVC fittings to the barrels? The pvc cement doesn't seem to work.

This really isn't my thing but the ones I've seen have threaded fittings with nuts and gaskets on both sides.

Those fittings are generally known as Banjo fittings, have a look here:

Hey, thanks alot. So I guess pvc fittings are out. Do you know if those blue plastic barrels are made from polyethlyene? I thought I would just epoxy the pvc fittings in place, but every epoxy I picked up specifically stated not for polyethlyene.

use the pvc fittings right off the home Depot shelf and caulk the crap out of it with silicone, works like a charm. Don't forget to put a screen in the pipe if you plan on putting any eels in it, they will swim right out into the river.

Well, I tried Liquid nails but no luck. It didn't take to the barrel. DO you still think silicone would work? I went to Tractor Supply today and saw they had threaded fittings. Maybe I'll need to try those?

I found the thread searching for eel tanks, I want to set up an outdoors livewell.

Actually, the silicone did work. I was surprised because everything stated on the package not to use on HDPE. How big of a tank are you making? I know that Tractor Supply and Agway sell 100 gallon livestock watertanks that already come with a recessed drain on the bottom. I believe Cabelas sells bait tanks that are round and up to fifty gallons with the fittings already in place I think.

Im going with a 30 gallon garbage pail with one of my fish tank pumps. The emporer or maybe the Eheim that Ive never used. I'll likely keep it outside near or in the shed with the hose close by.

It's funny, I saw one of those after I made mine and said "D'OH!" That would have been so simple. You should have no problems with sealing your fittings using one of those.
