The other day I was at a gentlemens house purchasing a rod and reel for stripers. Being green to the sport I was asking him tons of questions about the sport. The rod I purchased was 1-4oz for plugging. I told him I would like to do some bait fishing also. He told me it would be fine as long as I watch the amount of weight I throw. He showed me a weight which had a bunch of fingers protruding from the weight which he said will grab into the sand and hold my bait out in the surf. This way I won't have to throw so much weight. Does anyone know what these types of weights are called? I would like to pick up a few just to give them a try
I'm not positive about where you can buy them, but I remember seeing them at some local baitshops before....you can definitly buy them somewhere online I'm sure.
They are called surf claw sinkers, or grapple sinkers.
I've tried these weights but be careful as they will puncture a fish when you bring them in.
I tried them on a high/low rig and every short fish had puncture holes in its belly so i stopped using them.
Yep, That is exactly what they looked like. That is interesting about puncturing the fish with them. Anything to do to prevent that? Man you guys really know your striper gear. Hopefullly some day I'll get there
