Default almost traded my flippin Ford for a Chevy? Nah

So the ole F-150, a 2000 4X4 Supercab Lariat started develoing a whine outta the rear end a few weeks back. My ear is not quite good enough to know exactly from where. Took it in to Portsmouth Ford to have them check it out, tells me it'll cost $95.47 for them to daignose the problem. A couple of hours later they call back saying what's wrong with my truck. The rear axle needs to be overhauled with new bearings and seals for the handsome price of $1240  And my lower ball joints are "extremely loose" a nice $585  , And while they're on a roll my rear shocks are leaking(which I knew) for the nice price of $235, comes to a whopping total of $2060   So I get there before they finish typing up the estimate and look at the work order laying on the counter showing how many hours to do each item; 6.5 hrs for the axle, 4.5 hrs for the ball joints and 1.3 hrs for the shocks. I look at the guy and ask what the labor rate is and he says $95.47 an hour   So this means labor on the axle is $620 and $620 in parts :?: no way do bearings and seals cost that much, I sell them for a living. The ball joints have $430 in labor and $155 for parts. My money tree is fresh ot of leaves so I guess I'm gonna try it myself. Last weekend pull the truck into mom and dads garage for the axle figuring it's gonna be there a week while I order parts at my discount :D Pull the rear end all apart and I got one bad whell bearing that is coming apart and getting ready to grenade in the rear axle. So after cleaning everything real good to get those pesky little metal pieces out I install 2 new wheel bearings and seals, fill the rear end with liquid gold (75w140 synthetic 3 quarts at $16 ea) Got out of it for under $100 Tah Dah works great nice and quiet and no howl from the rear end(still no noise a week later) So this weekend it's on to the lower ball joints, the instructions in the haynes manual suck so I go to F150online.com and get a better easier way to do it(after wasting 5 hours with the way the manual tells you to do it). Once I got all set up with the tools I needed it only took me about 3 hours to get it done for $64 worth of parts. The new ball joints are greaseable and have a lifetime warranty unlike the Ford factory parts. So in a couple weeks I'll tackle the shocks, I'm tired of working on cars for now.........

Default Chebbies rule, Fords drool.....

Hey Steve,
Glad to hear you aren't afraid to work on your own stuff, as a Ford owner you'll need that
I'm a diehard GM guy, but after experience with all makes of trucks I can say unequivocally that.....they all suck. Eventually. But the only thing that sucks more, is truck dealers.
I think the Ford/GM debate is one that will go on forever, like Yankees/Sox, Gordon/Earnhardt, that kinda thing.
Good luck with your ride,

Ed

oh yeah, so while I got the truck on jackstands I hop in the 96 Escort beatermobile to go get parts....won't start. Ended up pushin it down the street and poppin the clutch. Figure the battery is crapped out since it's 9 years old, nope starter. So I get a new battery and starter and got 2 dead vehicles on jack stands........
