Question on plug refinishing

Without buying an airbrush, is there any decent way to refinish wood plugs? What kind of paint, clear top coat, etc...

Lots of great plugs are painted with spray cans. Search this forum for brand names etc. Most guys are using envirotex-Lite 2 part epoxy to topcoat with, but for a single plug you could try to find some Devcon 2-ton 30 minute epoxy, coat the plug and flip end-for-end till the epoxy sets, then hang to dry.

I have seen some work from a European guy on another Lure building forum. He does a sponge painting method. I think he paints the base coat with a brush, then smears on multiple colors with a sponge. Ends up looking like marble.
