Default Brittle line

I did a search and really didnt find an answer to this one. I was out today for about my 18th time fishing with 16/18lbs mono and it was extremly brittle. It was to the point where I could break it with my two hands and giving it a tug. Any reason this happened, poor up keep, crap line? The line brought a 34inch bass with no problem in July, just wondering why did it crap the bed now.

If the reason is up keep or crap line any suggestions on good mono and proper up keep. I am washing the reels down after every use.

Thanks

JD

ps Lost the biggest fish of the year bc of this so I am very interested in solving this.

among other brands that would figure. most made for freshwater fishing are shot in salt after a short period of time. i had ande line last quite a while but as the diameter of line diminishes so does it's longevity. stren/trilene/ etc. but try yo-zuri hybrid line. it is part fluorocarbon and will be sufficient for the season. hope this helps you

Storing in direct sunlight will cause brittleness as well.

Yup, heat and UV light can do a job on mono

Even keeping your reels is a spot where light from a window shines on the line can cause brittleness over time.

I have been keeping my rods in a boat closet that gets no light and is in the house. I dont mind paying for something aslong as its once. Other than the Yozuri suggestion anyone have solid mono line recommedations. I am not happy that this happened and lost a pretty damn big fish.

Thanks

I am new and fish off a boat so I thought Yozuri mono would be the best choice. Next year I am probally going to make the move over to braid. Thanks for the help though. I was a major mistake on my part that will not happen again.

Some People still prefer Mono... I had it once in High school never wanted it again...lol...
But i prefer Braid Further casts and no memory... Hasn't let me down yet.. Until that one time with a knot in the line i rather not talk about.
