Default Loose wrap on spool

I've been noticing a loose line wrap on the spool of my Shimano 4500 when working pencil poppers or jigging bucktails or surface poppers. Any tips on preventing it?

after every cast...before flipping the bail..check for a loop and correct it before flipping the bail....or...grab the line and run it under your index finger..using the hand thats holding the rod of course...and keep tension from that point. it can be tricky to get the feel of it because you are using that hand to whip the rod back and fourth..but it can be done...practice..practice..practice. sometimes i dont bother and pray that i will cast the slack out..without a snap..and correct it on the next cast..its like chewing gum while rubbing your belly and head on one foot at the same time...oh..throw in reciting the alphabet backwards too.

Have you tried wet packing the line?

The line starts out being packed tight. It wraps loose on the retrieve when I'm jigging. Using metal lips or bottle poppers is not a problem. It's what I'm doing wrong during the retrieve of a jigging or popping lure.

Like Jim said, run the line through your fingers before the spool. I always do this, just out of habit, to maintain consistent tension on the line as it enters the spool.

after you jig up or pop the plug you have slack in the line and if you are holding the rod forward of you where the slack will be pronounced the lightweight line droops as the rod is let down to start the winding of the reel and that loop will wrap oround the spool halfassed. this happens with 4-6-8=10# mono as well but not nearly as often. your guide may be rather large as a ron arra or any plugging rod would really cause these problems as the guide is not only further away from the spool but the fuji guides are large enough to allow slack like this. a jigging outfit would be more on the lines of a 8 or 9 ft rod. and the baitrunner is (well we all know how i feel about them)

Are you fishing plugs in the surf? Just curious.
But it sounds to me as well, that there is not enough tension on the retrieved line.

Happens from the surf and boat. I'll be trying Jimi's technique tomorrow morning in the river, and then over the weekend on the Saco,,,, and then again on Monday back in the river.

are you closing the bail manually or do you just start cranking when your plug hits the water? i'm thinking if you take a second to close the bail with your hand (something braid users benefit from) and take up the slack to make contact with the plug before you work it might help.
taking those extra few seconds after splashdown can produce some great hits. i can't tell you how many times my swimmers have gotten hammered while i was scratching my balls, or picking my nose.

Now that's a technique you will never read in any book and only hear about on Stripers247. I'm going to practice and master them.

Hey Rickski check these guys out..........

http://www.wavespinreel.com/action.html

I didn't really look at the site too much but I saw an ad they had in BASSIN' MAGAZINE. I'm not sure but I think their reels are designed to prevent the problem you were having.
