Dear Dana,

Because seals are protected by federal statutes (Marine mammal act) it's not within any state's authority to authorize a hunting season. You could contact the US Fish and Wildlife Service office in Hadley for more information.

Does the Mass Dept of fish and game foresee a time when seal hunting will be
allowed? It seems to me the population is out of control. They don't really
control any pest species (e.g. spiny dogfish). They attract sharks. They scare
away the striped bass. In my opinion they are just a plain nuisance, and a
short hunting season would be fine. Weapon class could be limited to large
caliber hand gun so as to limit the range of stray rounds. Permit issuance in
that instance would be limited to folks who already have a handgun permit (i.e.
have already been through an 8 hour safety course)

Something to think about. Regards,

Well, I tried. Anybody else want to chime in, maybe we can get enough voices to petition for a short hunting season! Any thoughts
