Default 550ssg and 450ssg

New to this Penn reel series. Could each of these be used with 20lb Berkely Big Game Mono or would you go lighter espcially with the 450ssg? Used exclusively for plugging and occasional swim bait. Thanks Boys!

Ive got the 550ssg on my 9' Tica. I've got two spools for it. One has 20lb berkley and the second one has 50lb power pro. Both cast great. Hope that helps.

I.M.O. if you plan on using braid, I would recommend a different reel.

I fish braid exclusively & had so many bad birds nests with my 450ssg & 550ssg that I sold them.

I also have a 4300ss that doesn't want to work well with braid. I use it just for squid now where I don't have to make any long casts (still have braid on it.

Braid is just too darn expensive to be cutting out birds nests.

Read a lot of other reports that said the same. In my experience braided line just seems to "like" the longer spools better.

Lately I've been using a Penn Sargus which has worked much better for me with braided lines. They're all metal, I like the all black look, & the way the loud drag screams when a striper is peeling line off the spool. Best wishes.

Brad

The five has a tendency to have the bail flip prematurely on the cast. A slight bend in the bail wire fixes it but notorious for that (and you'd be in deep chit when it happens with braid) but it handles braid as long as it is power pro. I hate berkley, i'd put some ande
Or yo-zuri hybrid if your gonna plug. No equal to braid but over time? You will no doubt incurr the bail issue casting too much with those reels.
Hey brad.. i remember a digruntled fellow at the cape... lol
