Default Shock leader?

I am new to the sport of stripers, I have been bouncing around on the forums trying to pic up a few tips before I venture out and try my luck. I have been noticing the term shock leader, which seems to gettied to the braided line. Can someone tell me what the purpose of the shock leader is for and what # leader should be used and length? Is the shock leader used for plugging and bait. I have 30lb braided on my Daiwa 2600 tournament. What leader should I be using? Also is this leader mono or something else. Thanks for all the help, What a great site. learn learn and learn some more.

Leader can be monofilament or fluorocarbon. I prefer fluoro as it is more abrasion resistant. The leader is to help prevent breakoffs when the fish tries to wrap itself around rocks/structure. I like using about 3' in a 40 or 50 lb test. But length and strength are up to you

DR, Does that hold true for both bait fishing and plugging?

The only bait I ever use is live eels and I use a fluoro leader. I don't think it's because of using bait or plugs so much as it's the structure you're fishing around. I use braided line and fluoro leadee also because there is less stretch in these lines so it keeps me in touch with the tip of my rod. If I was chunking bait and letting it sit on the bottom I might use mono so that there is less sensitivity to the fish when he goes at my bait

I USE BRAIDED ON 1 ROD FOR CASTING PLUGS, 30, POWER-PRO. I USE 10' OF 25LB HI-SEAS QUATROS AS A SHOCK LEADER, 10' BECAUSE IT WINDS THE ALBRITE KNOT YOUR GOING TO USE TO CONNECT THE 2 LINES WITH. ON THE REEL AND IT CASTS BETTER. YOU CAN USE 3 OR 2 ' FOR BAIT FISHING OF 40 OR 50 MONO. I DONT BAIT FISH WITH MY CASTING RODS
