Striped bass fishing at the Isleton Bridge, Georgiana Slough and at the Old Sacramento River at the dump gate is okay for bait fishing.

Small stripe bass have been showing up near the Rio Vista Bridge.

According to Can Nguyen at Bob's Bait in Isleton, the tiny town of Locke is the striper hot spot right now. Fish the early AM and the late PM tide changes for best effect. Recent weights recorded there were from seven to 19 pounds.

Of note: Jerry Burns from Martini's Bait and Tackle in Lodi reported about a dozen striped bass, between 6 and 18 pounds, caught on the Mokelumne River using shad. ... Diane Prescott from Vieira's Resort in Isleton said things are "fair," as fewer fishermen are coming out due to the weather, but there's still 12 to 18 salmon being brought in each day, between 8 and 30 pounds, using double-bladed silvertrons and blue foxes. ... Audie Urbano from Hap's Bait and Tackle in Rio Vista said striper fishing has been good, with weights up to 15 pounds, using shad near the Rio Vista Bridge and Decker Island. Also some sturgeon -- up to 76 pounds -- in the same area using ghost shrimp.

Default SAN JAOQUIN RIVER side:

SAN JAOQUIN RIVER side: Discovery Bay continues to give up stripers to 18 pounds on chrome Rat-L-Traps and Stump Jumpers. Look for slow moving black bass with crankbaits in Fire Tiger colors. Don't forget your new license and Delta Enhancement stamp.

Bright salmon continue to move through the Sacramento River system at the Old Mouth, Isleton and Walnut Grove areas. Chinook to 22 pounds were logged Monday. Vieira's Resort is weighing an average of 15 fish per morning session.

Striped bass in the 18- to 22-inch class respond to trollers below the Rio Vista Bridge and all the way down to Sherman Lake. Shoreline anglers hook them on mudsuckers, shad and sardines right off the Rio Vista Pier. Bait dunkers seem to entice larger fish that range from 7 to 17 pounds, and most describe the bite as "good and improving." Even an occasional sturgeon, 55 to 63 pounds, is in the mix at the Powerlines and Decker Island. This week's predicted rain only will help.
On the San Joaquin River side, striped bass run 5 to 11 pounds, and there seems to be no end to the numbers, especially in the Mokelumne River North and South forks, Sycamore Slough and Santa Clara and San Andreas shoals. Shad and mudsuckers are the tickets. Some haul single Rebel and Bomber lures with good results. Productive close-to-the city spots include sloughs off Eight Mile Road, Louis Park and Bacon Island, where a 36-pounder was hooked on shad.

Stay off the water. Not only will you jeopardize the already weakened levee system, you'll be putting your life in danger. Strike a fallen tree and you'll sink. Allow a bow line to get entangled with a big log and you'll likewise be sunk. Check with the U.S. Coast Guard for restrictions. If you insist on fishing, stay on the banks of the back sloughs and toss bait. A better plan, however, is to wait awhile. Information: (707) 374-2372 (Rio Vista); (209) 333-1692 (Lodi); (209) 473-2239; (209) 948-6344.

Salt water

San Pablo Bay: Try the shoreline or pier at China Camp State Park and have a very good chance of hooking a sturgeon. Landing such a beast from shore is another matter, but the fish are close at hand, in very shallow water. Shrimpbaits might not only entice a sturgeon, but a striped bass as well. When conditions permit, boaters are anchoring in the China Camp, Pumphouse and Buoy 5 area to post impressive scores. Information: (415) 456-0321 (San Rafael).

Suisun Bay: The entire system was off limits on Monday, but sanctions should be lifted by later in the week. Try the protected waters such as Suisun Slough and Montezuma Slough for sturgeon and striped bass. Roe, lamprey eel and shad are the tickets. Information: (916) 777-6498 (Isleton).
