First Trip to Long Island
Going to make my first venture down to the Island, only thing is I dont know the lay of the land and would love any advice you rock hoppers could lend me
my gear
- couple rods, extra spooled reel, pliers, surf bag, neoprene waders, misc
my plan
- head down to new london Fri afternoon, ferry over to montauk, drive to port Jefferson, get well lubricated with some buddies, wake up Sat morn and head for long beach (SW side of LI)
...any advice?
ANY ADVICE ON LOCAL TACKLE SHOPE WITH DECENT PLUGS?!

the 9th is the moon so a new body of fish may hit that beach. take rigs for bait as that may be you only hope as the water is still very cold

Don't forget the wader belt, drytop, and most importantly korkers!

- got the belt, looking for a decent jacket, and i have felt bottom boots on the waders - which do fine on the canal rocks - but are the spikes necessary down there?

Re: First Trip to Long Island
Actually now that my lazy ass re-read the thread you may not need the korkers if long beach doesn't have rocks. I would be most concerned with falling in with the water temps where they are at. That said if the surf is up and your going to be on rocks yes korkers will help a lot, I would be worried that a larger wave would slid my feet out with just felt. Oh course the only reason I respond is my first time to Montauk I swam...even with the korkers....thank god for the drytop and wader belt. Check out Saltwater Edge on those!

- hey great site thanks for this help. We're geared up and ready to go already so we're gonna make an attempt at getting down there. We'll drink like fish but probably wont be catching many. Anyone have advice on a decent tackle shop in the area? i'd like to grab a couple more plugs and more importantly maybe a fish report from the area.
