well...it was gonna happen sooner or later.
ive been wanting to try and build a rod for some time now...after seeing rickski with his new rod building goodies this past weekend i just couldnt supress the desire within any more. sunday afternoon, after a sleepless gathering weekend, i decided to go ahead and pick up everything needed to build me an eel stick...like i need another project. anyway, this will be my first rod build...who knows, maybe my last. as i get into it i will post some pics of the progress and most likeley ask some questions.

Good luck Jim! If you pick it up half as quickly as you did plug building you'll crank out a top notch rod for sure

..wtg zim...i have to admit, thats a good one...
i havent really done too much yet. ive been taking my time practicing thread wrapping on a dowel before i go any further on the rod. all ive done so far is locate the spine, glue on the reel seat and wrap cork grips. ive also mocked up the guides and will work on the adjusting the spacing when the work area is done. the past week ive been designing and building a rod lathe and setting up the rod building station so everything i need is in one spot. ill snap some pics when im ready to start wrapping thread.

Re: well...it was gonna happen sooner or later.
ok fellow striper nuts. heres some first attempt rod building updates. the rod im building is going to be my go to eel slinger. the blank is a lamiglas MB1083M it started out at 9', and i took 4" off the tip to make it 8' 6". i plan on switching between a shimano baitrunner 3500 (thanks zim) and a freshly restored pen650ss. 30lb suffix or 20lb fireline on the baitrunner and im thinking 50lb braid on the penn...i will need to test lines to make my final decision on that. i took a few pictures...not the best quality (sorry). ill take more pics when its done, im still working on on decorative thread wrapping on the handles and i ned to put on the tip and hook hanger. i got my diamond wrap done and the guides are wrapped. enjoy.

Re: well...it was gonna happen sooner or later.
thanks for the kind words guys. ive still got some more thread work to do. the guide wraps will get some decorative trim on the ends once i finish the handle decorations. i will snap some more pics of the whole thing just before epoxy...im going to have a few questions before i put on the glue..just in case i have to re-locate any guides...i will be looking for opinions and suggestions regarding how well i did following the curve of the blank when under a load. more to come....
