Default Fishing in NY & NJ for the week beginning 5/5/06

What, how, boat or beach and when is great but please don't be too specific naming the spots, Bayshore, Hook, NoMon, SoMon, NoOcean, SoOcean......... is plenty.
Since the NJ forum is now part of the "Mid-Coast" forum, we'll need some new abbreviations to describe Staten Island, Long Island, the Sound, Manhattan, what have you. Use those shown below for Joisey.....

Bayshore = Parkway Bridge to Atlantic Highlands
Hook = Sandy Hook
NoMon = SeaBright to Asbury Park
SoMon = Bradley Beach to Manasquan
NoOcean = Point Pleasant to Seaside
IBSP = Island Beach State Park
SoOcean = Toms River to Forked River
For river or back bay fish just use one of the above terms and follow with "in the back"

Default Finally, one for the grill

Fished the early morning shift down here in So Monmouth Co, 3 fish in 4+ hours, 2 were 25"-26", and the last one was 28" and a little bit, but not much. He is soaking in juices now, waiting for the grill at dinnertime.
All on clams, and the one I brought home was caught in the 5 Minute overtime session before I HAD to leave to make my daughter's soccer game. Ya just never know when the little suckers are going to appear.

Nice Job Ed. 5 minute overtime huh? Just curious, if that fish had'nt shown up would it have gone into double overtime regardless of said soccer game????

Seriously, i'm heading to NoMon tommorrow on the boat, will let you know how we do.

BTW did you run into any blues?

I hit NoMon from 6-8:30pm tonite on the outgoing. caught 2 females filled with eggs. one was 24" and the other about 20". both on clams. caught the first one as soon as the bait hit the water. the second wasnt long after. then caught a skate on a bunker chunk. the season definitely is heating up.

Well, after catching fish the last 3 times down to the beach, I knew the skunkaroo was just waiting for me, it stank bad today, 4 of us fished south Monmouth/north Ocean counties today with not one fish, hit, or even a nibble to show for it. 4 guys, 5:30 - 11:30, that's 24 man-hours of fishing with NO sign of life.
we started on Ocean Co, then moved north to my usual beach, and as we're driving that way we start to see 1, then 2, then 3 and finally 5 party boats all right off the beach, nearly casting distance from shore, right where we were going to fish, and I'm thinking they have all the fancy-schmancy electronics, they must know something.
NADA.
Never saw a net come out, party boats kept moving right around the same area, plenty of other boats too, but never saw a fish. Oh Well.

I was on my last clam, and I never miss the games, so I just got lucky there....but boy did he taste good right off the grill.
Even though I've read reports of blues in the bays, I have not seen one out fron yet.

afx, I think you're right, for me at least the season has definitley heated up, despit the occasional skunky smell.

c'mon up, bluefish all over i am just freaked out by bluefish now. i was suppose to go out yesterday on my buddies boat but declined since he didn't want to troll. all he caught was bluefish anyway. today? bluefish. came home to check the board. one 20lb bass my buddy got out by the channel, sure others did well by the navy pier as well. that is where i'd be trolling in a boat anyway, nobody listens to reason.

Well my tally for today was 5 skates, a sea robin, and 1 26".

Its almost like the conditions were too perfect today. Oh well, the quest continues.

Hell, where I was yesterday, we would have praised the fish gods for a couple of blues, anything, just to get the damn stink off. They're not my favorite either, but if given the choice between blues and nuttin', I'll catch blues till my arms fall off, thanks.

I was kinda surprised, we were up around the rip and areas around it, and we didn't see one blue. If anything it would have made our morning a little more exciting. I didn't get our one bass until around 2:00.

I had one monster blue off canarsie pier the other week was about 12 lbs. Got myself a giant landing net so I don't have to gaff fish anymore. Will head out after class on Thursday. College allows lots of fishing time :)
