Are you going from a beach/jetty/bridge? Need more specifics of what you will be doing before someone can give ya advice.

This link tells you the basic's of what you need to start surf fishing.

9 foot is good if you need to cast some. If your fishing in tight you would go shorter.
Call it a rod - pole is a term reserved for the illegals.

i am fishing from river bank and there is no surf. this is where will do majority of my fishing. im using a daiwa jupiter 6000 reel on my 9' surf casting rod this was recommended to me but i dont see many others using them. i already owned 1 anyways. but am wondering if such a large set up might be unnecessary or possibly hurting me not helping me? kinda feel guilty using surf caster in fresh water too

I bring my 9 foot rods to the Hudson and I could care less what others are using. I use mine to plug with and even use the 10 foot for pencils.
I think I have a batson 8 foot plugging rod, and a lami 8 footer caster but i wouldnt use any of them for dead sticking with. (Unless it was absolutely necessary) For that I use a 10 foot St Croix Premier. The rest of my < 8 foot freshwater rods are for guppy fishing. I only own 1 - 6 foot 6 inch boat rod. I think i used it once.
It all depends on the area and casting distance you might need. And of course with a slob you would need a rod with backbone.

That guilt should fade pretty quickly when a 3ft striper takes your bait. Setup is fine imo
