Moving tide (going up or down) seems to be more important than high or low.

How do you go about knowing when the tide is, or will be "Moving".
Thanks

Well.....look for low tide time...then shortly after that it will begin to rise for a period of time...seems like it goes slack around mid tide...then will continue to rise until high tide and then start to fall after high tide.

Slack tide occurs for a short period when the tide is at absolute high or low tide. There is a short period when the water isn't moving. Tidal charts will tell you when that is for the area you're in.

That's easy... tides are caused by the moon's gravitational pull on the Earth, while current is more a factor of water moving from higher ground to lower ground, generally.

Ive caught all my biggest stripers on out going tide .but ive had the best luck as far as catching herring and shad at tide change .it really depends on water depth and structure ...if there is a natural under water shelf or a bank that the current curves around then tide dont matter because the stripers are a natural predator and they will take the easiest way to catch there prey weather in deep water or shallow

Bassin.
You might find this stuff cool. Read the stickies on tides and astronomical data.

And like scotia says Put your time in and Fish hard.

Chance favors the prepared mind.

Question Re: High or Low Tides??

I did better last year on the outgoing tide, although I thought that incoming tide made more sense, since the tide is coming in and thus, bringing in the fish. I wonder if DEC told the Stripers that Shad are now only catch and release? The Stripers aren't from NY and wouldn't know that regulation. Wouldn't be fair to ticket them, would it?
