I love those reels, bought my first 1600 19 years ago when they first came out. An extra spool cost $80 then
That reel has caught hundreds and hundreds of fish and finally passed beyond my ability to service it 2 years ago. Sent it to Daiwa and for $17 got it back good as new and ready for a few hundred more.
The only problem is that they're small, best suited for schoolies and back bay stuff (the buttery smooth drag makes them especially good for jigging weakies in the bay). The Black Gold series goes from small sizes to "What the hell do you do with that monster?" size.
If you're looking for a reel to match a 10' or 11' rod the SS series is going to be too small
