Default Penn 525 Mag

I am really impressed with the casting distances I have been getting with the Penn 525 mag reel.

Presently wrapping a 11' , 1-3 oz. for just such a thing.
Tried the reel twice last year and creamed my shorts!!!

Don't believe it's for 'the faint of heart' though.

Really looking forward to sending short eels and such to the "island" from the beach.

Agree with you, it's a very nice reel for the price.

Think it'll be a wake-up call for ABU? It is about time they get in step.

I did a side by side comparison in the actual surf condtions with a 7500C3CT with the same rod and 5nbait. I could hit over the breakers with the Penn, but not with the Abu.

That's not a fair comparison though. Try it with a 6500 Mag Elite or Pro Rocket or even the new Record - your results will be much closer.
There's a reason why most every single tournament distance caster uses Abu

That being said, the Penn has a great drag and throws almost as far.

I don't know but I do respect your comments. I have all those reels you mentioned, but the 6500 CT mag elite is nice. If it came with a clicker than maybe I would consider it. The CS pro rocket is nice, but it is level wind. The Abu Record is a fine reel, but I am not into the thumb bar for casting 5nbait & the level wind thing. Then again this reel has a very weak clicker. Besides those reel lack a nice flange to grip the spool for casting. The other reel I have is a Blue Yonder that is a good caster, but I have never tested it out other than a few lobs I do have another Penn 525 mag that is new in the box that has been waiting for blue waters. Seriously I find the Penn 525 more versatile and functional over the Abu reels except for the 7500 series CT reels.

You are right about the drag on the Penn.

Thumbs up Re: Penn 525 Mag

Hi Guys,
Have read alot of threads on the pros and cons of Abu's,Mag 525
Avet makes a tremendous reel if you can tame it and the company
May eventually consider doing factory upgrades.
I recently got hold of Daiwa Sealine 20 Hsv and feel that it can
Take on the 525 in distance, drag, line capacity 350 vs 250 and
8oz.s lighter in overall weight.Oddly enough I like HSV more than
The new Sealine HSA series because it felt a little smoother.
Take care and everyone have a great year.

Ordered a penn 525 Mag should be here in five more days around the 15 of April. I checked the mail to see it it has come early, cant wait. Have been casting with spinning reels Mitchels and Penn 750ms. With a 4oz weight and a 8 foot or 14 foot rod can only get 380 feet with them. I surf fish in Mexico Cabo, Mazatlan, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta. But sometimes the bait balls are a little further out and especially if the wind is in you face hard to reach them. So after reading a lot on the different surf sites I ordered the 525. Only been surf fishing for a few years so I am still new at this.
Live in Washington state not much surf fishing except for perch. Plus it always windy, cold/cool and a little to much rain. So since I am retired now, off to Mexico. Just got back from Mazatlan. From the beech I caught some Perch, Roosters, Jacks, 40lb eagele ray, carbinas, pomaono, Serria and some no good needle fish and ocean catfish. Heading to Cabo next, it is a lot better surf fishing there. Mexico coast is all federal land so you dont need fishing license. If you are heading south I can tell you a few spots to check out.
