I do it a little differently. I use a tin squid with a swinging hook, which I remove. The one in the picture is a Point Jude Big butterfish (I'm a big fan of Point Jude tins, especially the Sea Scallop but that's a topic for another thread)
Tie a length of leader to the rear loop and tie a 50# duolock snap on the other end. I use 30# to 50# flouro depending if blues are around. Use this rig to cast large flies out farther then you could with a fly rod and with more control. It works extremely well on beaches with a hard lateral current.
