Question Does anyone use teasers???

I fish on the north shore of Long Island and have yet to catch a keeper striper! This season I've caught plenty of schoolies but not the elusive keeper. I've been using a teaser rig (the teaser is about 2 1/2 feet in front of my lure) and just about every lure I can think of. I've tried poppers, darters, swimmers, you name it! I only seem to catch fish on the teaser...the best combination has been a white darter with a blue teaser. The teaser seems to make the fish aggressively hit the rig, but apparently not the big fish. I've seem a lot of big tail slaps but no hits. Anyone have a suggestion?

Thinking about it I think the biggest fish I ever got on a teaser was mid teens, never a big one and I fish teasers a lot.

I'm curious if anyone here has a fish over 20 on a teaser.

Scott, it's the smaller fish that are more competitive, and the teaser triggers its predator response, seeing the teaser being chased by a larger lure/fish makes that greedy striper jumpstart to beat out its competition. The larger Stripers will wait for a larger prey with less work involved. (at least that's how teasers were explained to me)

It seems like it would make sense to go after the bigger lure first but they don't.

Yes, a pork rind teaser tied to a dropper loop in front of a Darter netted me a 58lb bass off the beach in the fall of '86... I've been a teaser advocate ever since....

Thanks for the input guys! I guess damned if you do and damned if you don't. I guess I'll keep using them since catching schoolies and blues on the teaser is better than getting skunked!

Scott,

Alot of your success (or lack of it) with big fish may be totaly related to location or the watrers you fish, the fact that you are consistanly catching fish says something.

If your sure bigger fish are in the area switch to a bigger bait, I've stated this a hundred times,if I've stated it once, big bait = big fish, if you want to avoid the twinks, throw something that they just cant eat....

Holy Schmoley Roc,
It's not like I needed any additional reason to use teasers, I love the little suckers, I love the fact that I can tie some hair on a hook and go catch fish with it. But I would have agreed with Sudsy that it's generally smaller fish taking the teasers, that's been my experience. 58 Lbs, I better take a little more care tying those droppers
And off the beach no less, now I can't wait to get down to the beach tomorrow, 35 knot winds and all........

I've had nights were every fish I caught was on a teaser. I won't use 'em if the toothy critters are around.

"Match the hatch" Their are times that they are keyed on to something small and the teasers will catch whats their big and small. Sometimes the lure is just the weight to get it out their, I'll just snap on a 1-4oz. bank sinker and try to hit England, you could be a bit fancier and get a casting egg.

Just an idea but, have you ever used a double jig rig (speck killer) or a striper swiper with a trailer bucktail about 18-24" back off the tail hook? Lots of times fish will come by for a look and end up nailing the bucktail. Works around SC on schooling / bait busting fish and also stripers and white bass on the rivers and lakes.
