Default Fishing in NY & NJ for the week beginning 5/12/06

What, how, boat or beach and when is great but please don't be too specific naming the spots, Bayshore, Hook, NoMon, SoMon, NoOcean, SoOcean......... is plenty.
Since the NJ forum is now part of the "Mid-Coast" forum, we'll need some new abbreviations to describe Staten Island, Long Island, the Sound, Manhattan, what have you. Use those shown below for Joisey.....

Bayshore = Parkway Bridge to Atlantic Highlands
Hook = Sandy Hook
NoMon = SeaBright to Asbury Park
SoMon = Bradley Beach to Manasquan
NoOcean = Point Pleasant to Seaside
IBSP = Island Beach State Park
SoOcean = Toms River to Forked River
For river or back bay fish just use one of the above terms and follow with "in the back"

Took a royal beating fishing up in the bay last night, top of the tide, hard east wind. The way the waves were rolling in and knocking me off the chunk of concrete I was standing on it was like a mini-Montauk. 2 1/2 hours, 5 bass all around 30". Left the drytop home, didn't expect to need it. Got soaking wet and had to pack it up or freeze to death, the new hole in the waders didn't help much either - left em biting

Fished Brookyln bays and beaches at 3am-10am. One bunker splash heard per 15 minutes. REALLY dead. Had one piece of bunker with faint teeth marks. I would assume fluke nabbing around. Could be wrong though.

One guy caught a Stargazer that looked like it weighed a few pounds. Fat buggers.

As compared to my fishing time yesterday, all daytime cause I'm SuperMom this week watching the kids, I had 2-1/2 hours, perfect striper weather, cloudy, grey, birds around, and the water wasn't bad considering the weather, it wasn't raining on me, jacket and waders kept me dry, it's all good, right?

0 fish for the day, 2 good hits, out front.......

So, who had the better day of fishing?

Default A Keepah

Well, it took 2 days of fishing and a dozen clams and one frozen bunka, but I finally broke the losing streak and put a keeper on the beach, then in the cooler, then on my cutting board, then in my fridge.....ummmmm-ummmmmm striper for dinner tomorrow. Poor little bastid was hungry, only thing in his belly was my clam and one lonely sand flea. I have one day left to fish tomorrow, before work/wife/kids/chores/life kicks back in, I hope to maybe find a few more.

Way to go Ed

So far as far as boating goes, this season is killing me. They are killing the fish up north and every day I can go out (sun or Mon), the forecast is crap. So far it has been VERY frustrating. I hope they stick around long enough for me to get up there a few more times.

Fished SoMon and NoOcean from 7:30PM to 12:30AM last night (Tuesday 5/16) with a buddy of mine, not a single hit. We were using plugs/jigs all night (I tried about 20 variations), traveled to 4 different spots but nothing biting. Some other guys at one of two of the spots, looked to be a mix of bait and live lining, but no screaming reels, no cursing from missed fish...just casting and retrieving...no fish seen or heard.

Was a nice night out nonetheless, always enjoy being near the ocean! ;)

AviD,
When I just can't stand to hold onto the bait rod anymore, I'll stick it in a spike and try the plugs, but so far, not a bump or a hit or a hint of a fish on anything I've thrown so far, all my fish have been on clams....I can't wait till they start whackin' the plugs, so I can do something besides stand there and wait for a fish to swim by.

Ed:

I caught two last week on a popper at night (odd combo apparently). I'm a relative newbie to stripers, but did manage to get some hits on the plugs last week, just can't believe it was so dead...could be the tides as well. I fished an outgoing high last week, this week it was an incoming high...we'll see, might get back out Friday night or Sunday.

This weekend I stumbled across a spot in the bay that's screaming "throw plugs at me" I'm going to have a go at it after softball tonight.

Ed, if yer up this way tonight (and it's not raining) call me on the cell.

Love to be there Suds, but the wife returns from her travels tonight, and I should probably be here watching the kiddies when she gets in.
I'll get in touch wit ya soon.
