Default Where to launch kayak in Newburyport?

I'm new to kayaking in the Newburyport area and have heard that the Joppa Flats area is a good spot fo fly fish. Can anyone give me some info on area's to launch a kayak in the area and some good locations I should kayak and fly fish for stripers? I'm assuming too far down river near the mouth gets too rough for a yak??
Thanks in advance for any help offered!

Not sure of launch areas around there but one word of advice is stay away from the mouth and out of the main channel. The water really rips through the mouth with the potential for large standing waves, and the channel is very busy and currents are strong.

Good luck and stay safe.

You want to launch at what is called the Water St. ramp.

A quick google search for "water st. ramp joppa" will point you to all sorts of good info.

I don't know the area so can't help you with where but I do know from experience that you should avoid heavy ripping currents like your life depends on it - and it does

I've never kayaked Joppa and don't know the area well either, but from what I've heard that ramp is only useable for a few hours on either side of high tide. Time your launch around that and keep an eye on your watch or you'll be doing the mud drag to get back in.

Also, I've heard that there has been some trouble over the years with folks who use that ramp being noisy and inconsiderate of the residents, especially loading/unloading at night when most 'normal' people are trying to sleep. Please keep this in mind when you're parking and loading/unloading, and be quiet and considerate of the people who live there.
