Question Onion Bag Scales?

I tried the bag over the plug. Holding it in place with clips, but it didn't give me a good or any scale finish. I checked this site but can not figure out what I did wrong. Please direct me to the thread that may have dealt with this problem before. Thanks!!

The secret is light coats of paint and dry in between. I also
got some material a fabric store. I think it was for bridal veils.
It definitely worked better than the onion bags. Hope this helps

Page 2 of Roccus's tutorial on building a Danny Lure shows you how to put scales on. https://www.stripers247.com/phpBB2/sh...?t=8141&page=2

I've used clips to hold the mesh on, but what has worked the best is some thread and a needle to quickly sew the mesh on. I use a eye hook to hang the plug while the paint dries. When the PAINT IS DRY, cut the thread and you're all set. Takes a few more minutes, but the results are nice. I'll post the results of my last batch in a couple weeks after all the plug swap plugs are revealed.

wal-mart has the mesh in bulk with the fabrics. its under $1.00 for a yard. they have the small and large size mesh for big and small scales. i have to agree with everyone so far...its important that the mesh is tight to the plug, use light coats of paint, let the paint dry completeley between coats and before you remove the mesh. clamping works well as long as the mesh is tight...and i really like ricks idea on threading it(great idea rick). there is also a post somewhere from roc showing a jig he made for quick screen over plug set up. search "scale machine" and you should find it.

Seriously Roc, some of your tools are cooler than your plugs...I am amazed at the ingenuity involved in coming up with these tools to perform very specific jobs. I am still stocking and building my shop, and learning from Gunny, but this fall I think I am in for a lot of time in said shop!

I also am listening to you very seriously and will be investing in a good air cleaning system...no plug is worth my lungs!

I think Roc should consider writing a book.....or two...or three...
I would buy each and read them at least twenty times.

to put in words what roc knows would take more volumes than the encyclopedia britanica delux set. he would need a title like the complete striper anthology...and lots of pages. i know i would buy the whole set. a dvd would top it all off...to read his teachings would be cool...but to see him work in "the cave" and tag along for some big bass action shots would be priceless.

Default Roc's TV show`

"The Bass Whisperer"
50 pounders and buckets of eels all under roc's spell out on the high seas
Makes me wonder, how does a confirmed eel slinger get so good at building plugs?
The scale machine looks like a great idea to steal, err, I mean, adapt.

I'm gettin' old and fogetfull, at leat I have someplace to come to and refresh my memory

I used strictly plugs for years... then I wised up and realized there are more ways to catch bass.

I may sling eels, but I use whatever method works best at the time....

Early in the season,I use alot of plugs and jigs... the summer is split between eels and plugs... the fall I do alot more plugging... but when the money is on the line....I reach for the slimy snakes...

4 years ago, with the uncertainty of the future of the eel, I revisted my plug making days, I originaly started making plugs because goo -goo eyes got scarce, and as a father with 4 children, I couldnt afford to buy them, so I made everything myself, even the lips...the goo goo is my go to plug in june when wiring the mouth of the river, bass are all over trhat thing early on. ... now with the looming possibility of eels being placed on the endangered list, or limited as a bait fish, I've one again taken to making plugs.... It's a pleasnt way to spend the winter monts....
