Default I had to make a spinner

After seeing these nice spinners, I had to make one. I'll admit that I just about copied the Roccus design. I hope Roc doesn't mind.

Here it is. I used some plugs ready for primer and paint as my test samples.

Don't ya love belts and pulleys. I needed them to get to 8 RPM.

With the lights on and the doors closed, it gets really warm in there.

Pretty frickin' sweet Zeema! I love the belt and pulley's, is that a toothed (cog) belt? That is awesome, I definitely need to enclose mine and light it up, I'm using it in the basement, which isn't nearly as dry as the rest of my house.
I have to admit that I was torn before I built my spinner, about whether to go thru the extra effort to find the parts and pieces needed to spin the plugs on their axis, or go with my "ferris wheel" approach, and I chose to build mine for expedience, and it works, but I have to admit to a touch of "spinner envy".

The old adage; Give a man a plug and he'll snap it off on a backlashed cast, teach a man to build plugs and he'll spend an entire winter spending twice as much money than if he bought them.
Zeema, you have gotton the addiction as bad but faster than virtually all of the rest of us saw dust makers!

It would definitely have been cheaper for me to buy plugs, but I want to learn how to make them, so when I toss them and forget to open the bail, I can put another on the line . It is an addiction, no doubt. My wife, kids, and the dogs are feeling neglected, but they will get over it. I have a mess of wood lying around so I'm making the best of it. All the gears and pulleys came out of a box of spare parts at work. The gear motor was saved from the dumpster. I did use cogged gears and timing belts. Put it all together and ya have a spinner. I think I'm into it for about 10 bucks..... maybe 20.

Nice. I like the doors so no dust gets in. I will admit rocs design was way too complicated for my first one. once I get more $$ and time I will upgrade but like i said nice job. if this is what you are capable of now imagine one year two years from now. Woah Lookout.

The motor is a 1/20 hp rated at 1725 RPM. The attached gear reduction brings it to 170 RPM. The first set of pulleys are turning at 60 RPM, second set at 24 RPM and then finally to 8 RPM. I end up with three spindles turning at 8 RPM and one at 24.

I worked with what I had. It would have been much simpler if I used a low RPM motor and fewer pulleys. McMaster-Carr has a 6 RPM AC gear motor for $20.92. It's their 3867K12. It produces about 6 in-lbs of torque, and they have a 5 RPM with 40 in-lbs of torque for $44.27. It's their 6142K53. I'm not sure how much torque it takes to drive plugs, but it can't be much.
