Re: DEC Finalizes New York State River Herring Regulations
So what is the creel limit going to be. I've heard 5 or 6 a day. But have seen nothing in writing.

Thanks, when they catch someone with more than there limit in the boat. It's just like any other limit of fish. Chances of getting caught are slim, getting caught is expensive.

Re: DEC Finalizes New York State River Herring Regulations
I know .. I fish from shore and CnR a lot of fish and catch bait as I need them. If I put in a full day im usually using more than ten but never have more than a few in the bucket.. Unless im with multiple people, in wgich case it wouldnt matter anyway.. 3 of us arent going to put over 30 ib the bucket...
The real issue now is going to be catching that first one.no more going to get a few quick from the creek

Re: DEC Finalizes New York State River Herring Regulations
Been here since last May so I pretty much missed the run last year. Catching herring for bait is by net only? or can I use a small lure on a pole? Bunker snagging is what I am used to..anyone's help would be appreciated.

Here are the main points, hope it helps ...
1) Daily use Limit of 10 per person, per day
2) NO nets of any kind allowed in any creeks ... you Can still use a dip/scap net in the main river portion.
3) Jigging for Herring is still allowed, in both creeks & main river

Re: DEC Finalizes New York State River Herring Regulations
no dip/scap nets in the creeks is going to be a tough one for a lot of people looking to get bait! Will they still allow for scapping at the mouth of the creeks if still in the main river? going to be interesting to see the enforcement on this one. tight lines all!

Re: DEC Finalizes New York State River Herring Regulations
It is not a limit of 10 to use per day .... it is a creel limit so you can not possess more than 10 at any given time.
10 a day would be horrible .... i will go through 100 on a good day

While I wish you were right.. I think you are wrong.
If you look at the link I posted it specifically says "daily limit" and 10/pp or 50/day for a party boat whichever is lower.

hmm ... it does read "possession limit" ..... maybe it will turn out that my interpretation is correct
i was under the impression it was a limit to the number you could have on board at any given time .... not necessarily your daily take although it would obviously be your daily limit if you elected to keep them
so if i am using a live herring and take it off and release it and then grab another one from my bait bucket i should be ok since i released it??
wow .... if not how the heck will they enforce it? ... if i catch a fish and the herring is gone will that count?? what if the striper missed it and knocked it off the hook so it swam away??
the idea of not having any more than 10 in your livewell is fine .... to limit me to 10 herring all day is silly ..... i can jig em up right where i fish and i usually don't keep any in the livewell .... i like em off the jig and on the hook

Re: DEC Finalizes New York State River Herring Regulations
Yeah from everything i read it's a total limit of 10 per day , per person. So once you use 10 , that's it. I agree 100% it's a silly law , no way to enforce it. ... i suggested numerous times to them about making it a "in possession" rule. like you're thinking SOF.
Just make sure you're not in any creeks with a net, that one i believe they will be checking regularly.

Re: DEC Finalizes New York State River Herring Regulations
According to NYS general fishing regulations...
“A person may not possess, kill or unnecessarily injure fish in excess of the daily limit for that species.”
Therefore, one might think that “returning” a fish to the water with a live bait hook in it’s head might just constitute unnecessary injury. Instead of considering conservation regulations “silly”, or trying to find a way to circumvent the regs, or brazenly violating them, think of the reason for the regs...they are there to help the river herring. Their numbers are way down - they need help to re-populate. The bass you love to catch need them to survive.
Many of our neighboring states have implemented moratoriums on river herring. New York is one of the few that hasn’t...as yet. Consider yourselves lucky that you’re able to use 10 per day.

Re: DEC Finalizes New York State River Herring Regulations
What are you guys jigging them up with? small rigs I guess with light colors? trailers? Help me out as I am not used to the river scene but very familiar with the sound. Let me know. Thanks!
