Default Va Beach Va Lynnhaven Boat Ramp in TROUBLE...

My name is Travis Beach, I am a member of Stripers247, SWFF, Surf TALK,, the VBSF Forum, (can ya tell I like to fish)a member of VCAN, Virginia Coastal Access Now, a resident of Va. Beach and a frequent user of the Lynnhaven Boat Ramp. For the last year or so the VB City council and Public Works have been conspiring to develop a plan to place a Permanent Dredge Spoils Transfer Station at the current Lynnhaven Boat Ramp facility. This is unacceptable.

The plan calls for upwards of 40-50 barge loads of dredge spoils, not sand as most are familiar with; this is a thick black substance not unlike tar or thick foul smelling mayonnaise to be unloaded at a permanent bulkhead facility at the LBR. These spoils will then be placed onto 60-70 12+ yard 16 wheel dump trucks and then hauled 16 miles around town to be dumped at a facility near NAS Oceana.

Between 31,000 and 41,000 boaters and citizens used the LBR in 2007 to either launch their boats or to enjoy the adjacent beach facility. Now all of these people will be forced to negotiate the narrow entrance road, through the parking lot, and on to the boat ramp or parking lot while fighting these trucks coming in and out of the LBR…this plan is absurd at best. The plan benefits very few people on the Lynnhaven River while placing tens of thousands of tax paying, LBR fee paying people at the mercy of a construction worker with a red flag and 20-25 ton dump trucks. Not to mention once having negotiated the gauntlet of trucks and launching your boat you will now be forced to navigate a notoriously difficult narrow channel with 48’ long barges and tugs 40-50 times a day. THIS PLAN MUST FAIL!

The City has set the meeting to present a formal brief on the proposed PERMANENT DREDGE TRANSFER SITE to be located at the Lynnhaven Boat Ramp for Wednesday evening, March 19, 2008, from 6:30-8:30 at Bayside Middle School. There will be an opportunity to take questions and provide answers on the proposed project after the brief. I can't stress enough to everyone that uses the boat ramp to be present for this meeting and to express their discontent with the current plans and HOW THEY WILL DISRUPT THE FUNCTION OF THE LBR. Several City Council representatives will be on hand, maybe some up for re-election this fall. In the meantime, please sign the petition at The Lynnhaven Boat Ramp is Closing link below and/or send letters to VMRC. If you do send a letter to VMRC, please send your concerns regarding the environmental impact this project will have to Crab Creek as well as the lack of maintenance by Public Works in keeping the Crab Creek Channel fully open, along with the potential conflict 120+ truck trips in and out of the facility will have on a boater's ability to launch and retrieve their boats. VMRC also needs your full name and MAILING address in your emails.

VMRC email Justin Worrell [email protected]

Please feel free to pass this along to anyone you feel may be affected by this insane plan. We are planning a rally of sorts to have as many people as possible drive their truck and boats to Bayside Middle School the evening of the 19th just prior to the meeting to show our solidarity to the Virginia Beach City Council. We need to fill the auditorium at Bayside in support of the LBR and against the VBCC on this matter. Stay tuned to Tidalfish.Com the Virginia Angler section for more details. If you’re a member fine if not join up, it’s a great place to learn about the local areas fishing and water.

I’ve enclosed a few links below for people to study...
