Fishing live eels as bait
I went out on a charter off of Montauk last month and we did very well fishing 8"-12" live eels, drifting and fishing them off the bottom on 5' leaders. Eeels are tough as nails and several times we caught up to 3 fish on a single eel, using it over and over.
In the spring I generally fish the Esopus areas of the Hudson. I've never tried live eels before, always herring. Has any one fished live eels in this part of the river in the Spring, and if so what worked? I would guess drifting in deeper water and fishing off the bottom - but am just guessing based on Montauk which of course is a very different environment.
