Default Lake Monroe, Indiana 4-23-2010

They've been hard to find of late. This is my fifth trip to Monroe and not a single wiper. Not even any signs of them. Of course, I had my theories about the lake being fished out and other such doomsday perdictions, but I held out hope that things would change. So with that in mind, Mr. Piggy and I set out to try to find the elusive wipers at about 2 p.m., launching from the Paynetown Ramp.

We initially fished the Moore's Creek area, and as before, we caught nothing. Then we moved to the Eads Inlet and decided to stop casting and start trolling. As we passed over a stump, I saw it on the sonar and held my breath in hopes I would not snag the thing, but no such luck. As my lure (a Stump Jumper with a 4" tail) crossed over the stump, I snagged solid and turned off the engine so I could stand up and start the long process of dislodging the lure. About the time I started reeling in, I felt the shake of the head. Five minutes later I had a gorgeous 6.4 pounder on board.

So, we let that one go and started trolling again; it worked once, it could work again. On the first turn I caught another wiper of about the same size. That got my attention; it had been months since I last tangled with a wiper. On the third pass I got another fish of about 4 lbs and, perhaps unfortunately, Mr. Piggy was fishless.

I decided to try casting for them. On my first long cast I caught an 8.14 pounder that took some doing to get on board, since I was using 8# test Suffix. But it did come onboard, as did the next fish that weighed about 4 lbs.

It was a great day on the water--for me. The sky was overcast. The water temp was 59 degrees. There was a slight wind gusting to about 10 mph and most of the fish came in relatively shallow water, probably 8 feet overall. The trolled catches all took Stump Jumpers and the cast catches took chartreuse casting spoons.

Hard as we tried, we just could not get a fish for Mr. Piggy. It might be his hand lotion or maybe the Preparation H he uses--might want to switch from the wipes to the original cream formula. Whatever it was, it just wasn't working that day, but one of us went home happy. I kept the two smallest fish and left the larger ones in the lake for you.

Good luck.

Wish I could have been there to watch Mr.Piggy go home empty handed. How many of those damn yellow bass did you get? You are the YELLOW BASS KING! I can't believe you didn't tell the story of how I caught the 1st wiper of the season on your boat. Don't let him fool you folks, he is great at catching the yellow monster!
