Default looking into a new surf rod and reel...

Im looking for a quality surf rod and reel, ideal for chunking and throwing lures, but there are so many I am lost. I fish from piers, rocks, and the beach primarily...I have a budget of $90-150 for the rod and likewise for the real(a reel with the baitrunner feature would be nice). I am a big fan of St.Croix rods, also Ugly Stik's...Any suggestions as to a good rod and reel that will handle my type of fishing?

i will pm you as there are bound to be a slew of suggestions. take of it what you will as they come. but if you have 300 beans to spend you could easily get a setup for pier/jetty and a setup for the surf.

I use a 10 ft Ugly Stick with a Shamino 4500B Baitrunner reel, and I LOVE it. 20 Lb test Line, got the rod for 69.99 and the Reel for 109.99 with a one year warranty.

My experience is not extensive so I am sure there are better set ups than this but I have 2 rods. One is a Daiwa 10' Surfline rated medium/heavy and the other is a 12' Ugly Stick rated heavy

The Ugly Stick has more tip action because of the length but the 10' is easier to handle

Both are 2 piece rods as it makes it easier to travel with them.

I like the action of the Ugly Stick and it still has enough "feel" to be in touch with what is going on but I am sure there are other rods out there that are even more sensitive and still as strong.

Both my rods have the Shimano Baitrunner 6500 which I like very much

If you go to a store and buy them together ask them to set it up with line for you. I did and got the line for free and set up on the reel

the ugly stik does not have "feel". let's put that in perspective.
a lami or even a st. croix rod has feel. the ugly stik has way too much flex but holds up to fish well. that said, it is a perfect beginning rod as it is durable and will stand up to more abuse than most other rods will.

You are mixing things that don't mix

Pier/bridge fishing is a totally different game that requires completely different gear then plugging or throwing bait from the ground.
If you get a short fish you'll have to winch it up. A rod that's very good at casting and working plugs won't survive that.

Pick the thing you do most and get a decent setup to cover that

So today I go to the outdoor store to do some checking out of higher end rods. They have the 12' St. Croix 2 piece rated medium.

OH MY GOD what a difference between that and my Ugly Stick. And they had it for $120. It's going on my wish list. So light weight that it would make it much easier for plugging. No wonder my arms and shoulders get tired when I use the ugly stick

Of course I haven't seen the AFAW or Lamiglas either.

As Zim said the Ugly Stick is a good beginner rod. If you get serious about it would be worth moving up to a higher end rod

Two other decent rods for plugging at the price are the tica dolphin and the Tsunami trophy.
Both around the $100 mark
There is a thread somewhere that lists most of the manufacturers and price categories.
