My dad's told me stories before of him catching bluefish on bare hooks. I'm sure they were shiny but it seems that whatever you throw into the middle of feeding blues will be eatin. I've read before that swimmers sometimes get bit by them.
It wasn't from a Yak, but in 1973 I got assigned to the USCG Diamond Shoal Light Tower off Hatteras. Barely any fishing equipment on board so I took 100 feet of orange Para cord and attached a "spoon". The spoon was a Table spoon with the handle cut off and a treble hook wired on.
I climbed to the bottom of the tower leg and let the line drift out in the current. After two weeks I brought home about 20 pounds of frozen Blue fillets. What a blast hand lining Blues.
Them Boo-fish will hit anything. There's a lot of one-legged seagulls out there that dropped into the "boil" for some scraps and stayed a second too long. Catch 10 fish from a school and they'll be within ounces of each other. They chop up their own " runts" If you're lucky enough to slide up into a blitz,....... for God's sake, don't get excited and roll it.
