CT spring striper river run

Can anyone tell me when the spring run on stripers heading up the CT and Thames Rivers, to spawn, will start? When will it be the best time/date to fish the rivers? What is the best bait to use?

Archerman, I moved your thread into the N.E. forum in hopes you'd get some more replies.

Not sure of the exact start times for your run down there as I am in NH, but try to "match the hatch" when it comes to fishing the Run. Live bait presentation are ofcourse always the top-pick. But I have plenty of luck with various topwater presentations (wood and plastics), swimbaits, and the occassional swimming plug. I always smear herring scent Smelly Jelly on artificials as well.

I had alot of luck during the Spring Run last year using a Tsunami TS popper, dark back w/ silver holographic belly. And dont forget the Smelly Jelly!

I would estimate late April to early may for the start of the run up the CT River. Use anything that resembles an alewife or herring and you'll murder em'. Shad are also a good bait because they run up the CT River around the same time.

I recently discovered a book, from a local charter captain, who has been concentrating on only fishing the spring CT River run. The books name evaids my brain at this moment but I will know it later. I gave it a brief overview and it is right to the point, very informative, and has plenty of one-liner jokes! I will post the books name and author later.
