Hello everyone. It's time to put in for my 2009 vacation. I wanted to take a couple of weeks in the spring for the striper run. This will be my first year on the river. I usually take all my vacation in Nov. for Hunting but I really want to fish this year. What would be the best time to take vacation? I have my boat on the water in Croton on the Hudson just don't know when to take off from work. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I tried to post this in the Hudson River section but got no responce.
I saw it there but no one wants to guesstimate and screw you up.
(Specifically for the Hudson River)
The run is over in 10 -12 weeks.
The bulls arrive in April and the Cows follow in May to spawn.
It is a function of winter melt-off - rainfall amounts - water temperature -
among a myriad of other things. No one can pinpoint it. The herring watch starts first.
I like the Month of May. It can be any week here.
The last few years have been a bit later in May.
Its all over by mid June.
Have a look at the reports from years past in the Hudson and pay attention to areas.
The fish surge up river and the run is then riverwide and hot in Troy.
They start arriving first at Piermont and Croton in Mid to late April.
you may want to coincide with one of the many tourneys to be had. this will be a very cold winter and historically the big girls (records) have been caught on the heels of bad winters (which have been 1st to 2nd week of may) but like jim say's a crap shoot for conditions warrant the run. these past several years have not been kind to you guys and with reason. just not like the old days. the bunker runs next season will be abismal so it may just pick up better for the hudson as more fish may need to make a run for food that normally feed well here. (or they follow the big girls on the way to the ne grounds. either way my bet would be the last week in april. the new moon is on saturday the 25th so 4 days prior to is someones holy grail of days and i always did well in daylight on that new moon. food for thought at the very least. good luck whichever you decide. zim
