where do i aim a crankbait?

the striper in bluestone lake feed primarily on shad. when casting crank baits where do you aim for? the rear, side, middle or behind of the school? my only experience is with the small and large mouth bass and I need a few tips please. wvtd from the land of poisoned water and corrupt politicians.
