Default whats everyone using for leader this year??

Ive been fishing striper's for 9 years, this year will be my 10th and i have never had a problem, the reason i ask is i lost by far the biggest striper of my career last spring boatside after he CHEWED THROUGH my 20lb PLine fluorocarbon leader.

the fight lasted 15-20 mins and the only conclusion i can come up with is that he was hooked deep in the mouth and every time he turned or changed direction the line raked across his upper lip until it finally wore itself through the line. When i retrieved the line and investigated the site of the break it was just like someone had taken sandpaper and rubbed through the line. I have been very impressed with the pline to this point have have landed many nice fish, quite a few in the 25-30lb range, but this fish was nothing like any of them... It was like being hooked to a submarine because when he decided to dive and run there wasnt a dang thing i was gonna do about it.

Thinking about running maybe a 40lb flouro leader this year....any other suggestions???

20lb seems kinda thin for a leader. 40lb fluro seems good especially if your fishing from a boat.

Almost all my fishing is done from shore soaking bait and I never go below 50 lb flouro leader. I use 65 lb braided line (Power Pro) to a brass snap swivel. Leader is 50 lb fluoro tied direct to a 6/0 (or larger) circle/J hook at one end and a small Spro barrel swivel at the other. Just my personal preference, some may say it's overkill but when the big gal hits (IF the big gals ever hits) I know I'm prepared. More importantly, I feel very comfortable that once I get a hook set that none of the components of my set-up will falter from my main line to the leader, barrel swivel etc. Just my .2 cents man, hope it helps if even a little.

I use 40 myself - sometimes 30 when i run out of 40. If the area is really rocky and I feel theres a chance of her rubbing across the boulders I go with 50.
It's Yozuri vanishing pink flouro as its fairly inexpensive or when I dont think I need flouro I use the ande leader wheels for 7.99. I find the pline nice and supple but a bit stiff - is that an oxymoron?

I switched to Gamma 4-5 yrs ago and now i won't use anything else.

It's so strong, if i happen to snag up during a drift it will actually turn the boat like you dropped anchor.

I am new to striper fishing (only my 2nd season) and I was told to use the nylon coated steel leaders because there are a lot of blues where I fish and their teeth will bite right through a reg mono leader. Any input on that advise???

I have caught stripers on metal leader but..you may loose quite a few if they sense it. they will spit it....if you are looking for stripers wait till the blues leave...and the stripers move in to clean up on bottom

are you bait fishing or wanting to use plugs/jigs/etc?
where do you fish anyway?
i'd catch just as many bass with a steel leader as a mono one.
for you... the number one rule is "do not put your rod down"
you come fish with us this spring at the freezout.... we will get you a fish.
well.... not philly> he will be housebound dreaming about fish. or he will say he is going but show up when the bass have moved on....lol

When Talking about leader I read this today on a site. If you are fishing flouro you can double the size of flouro and be at the same refraction and reflection of half the size mono. That being said if you are fishing at night you are less succeptible to having a bass detect your leader. I honestly didn't use a wire leader once last year and had very few chew offs.

I haven't used wire in 7 years.
I try to avoid bluefish like the plague.

Circle hooks and 36" leaders works pretty good if forced to chunk.

Heres an article on the relative refractive indices, for what its worth.
