Default Gluing, Cross Grain, and Holly questions

Has anyone tried gluing 2 pieced of 3/4" to get a 1 1/2" blank ready for turning?

How about turning across the grain rather than parallel to it?

Last question...Anyone try making plugs from Holly?

How's it work?

yes, ive turned glued pieces...i made my daughter a few mini danny plug keychains and i left them natural wood color. i used 4 strips of wood, 2 mahogany and 2 white cedar..for a neat color effect after it was turned, so far its held up to a 17year old girls car keys. im not sure the best way to glue them, you may want to make a few glued prototypes and beat em hard to see how they hold up.

i never tried turning against the grain..it just doesnt seem like it would turn well unless your tolls are really sharp..i guess it would work though, thats how you make bowls, but im not sure about plugs.

sorry, i never turned holly.

Turn across the grain and you'll have a very easily broken plug.

Gorilla glue would be the best choice for gluing up stock

Ditto on the gorilla glue, I just made some darters by gluing 2 pieces of mahogany together, and when I turned the first blank I beat the snot out of it trying to break it, couldn't do it.
The darters sucked though, rolled out and skipped across the surface. Just got a fish yesterday on a yellow Bob Hahn, may have to try my hand at "developing" one of those.
