Post Results of fishing trip 12/8/07

Hi guys,

I told you all that I would report on out fishing trip, so here goes.

We went by the new Bass Pro Shops in Newport News and picked up some tackle before we headed out. I bought a daisy chain, spreader bar, some parachutes and shad bodies. My partner John picked up an umbrella rig and some artifical eels in assorted sizes.

When we arrived at the CBBT (3rd and 4th islands), there were approx. 100 boats working the ocean side of the tunnel. Water temp. was 48 degrees. We deployed our trolling rigs with great anticipation.

We could see the fish with our electronics at around 25 ft. People were catching stripers all around us, but we couldn't even get a nibble. I think I made an error in not buying a white daisy chain. Or we weren't getting the rigs down deep enough. When the outgoing tide slowed, the fleet scattered. We started casting bucktails around the pilings with still no luck.

I determined we weren't getting down to the fish while trolling so we added 20 oz. inline weights to our rigs. So nearing dusk, we started trolling the bayside of the bridge towards the highrise (eastern shore) and finally pick up some fish at the edge of nine foot shoal. John reeled in a double on the chartruse daisy chain. One was a keeper at 18in. and the other was 16, which had to go back. Next I caught another 18 incher. And that was all we caught. Once darkness settled in we stayed another 2hrs. with no luck.

When we got back to the marina, one of the local boat owners said a fisherman came in with a 59lber. Caught on a single 6" parachute, but wouldn't divulge where he picked it up.

If you guys know what we are doing wrong, please help me out. We may try again this weekend while the bite is on.

Thanks,

Hi welcome to the site. I'm not an expert on trolling for stripers, but when we troll in J-bay we don't use that much weight we just put a lot of line out. Did you try the parachute's? those work well but get tiring after awhile.
Try using the search option and doing a search for trolling.
