Live Bait

Ok, this may get moved to another forum, and thats ok....just need to know if anyone has any information on this topic. I fish out of Wynona, MD my uncle passed a little over a year ago. We used to keep Live bait in a 55 gal tank in his basement. Now that he's gone, there is no one to care for the fish during the week. We are considering putting in a saltwater pond outside to keep our bait in. Has anyone ever tried this, known anyone who tried this or am I completly out of my mind in attempting this. During fishing season we are there at least every other weekend if not every weekend, so salinity levels and such can be tested at that time.

I have never heard of someone doing this. sounds like it would be great if it worked though.

Anything is possible....that would be one hell of a fish tank. In the end if all else fails you will have a pond of ammonia. Never have to buy ammonia again. :shock:

Well ya know....everyone has to come up with a new idea. Met with my cousin last night and I think we're going to give it a try. Hell of a hole we have to dig, but hey if we can keep spot alive so we can live line them....I guess it'll all pay off. Maybe I'll have to start a post on "how to build a salt water garden pond for that live bait you're looking for"

Sounds like a cool idea...

The only obstacle I can see is the maintnence of the saltwater...every time it rains its gonna throw off the balance...I don't think the pond has enough volume to balance out the fresh...

...Its wortha try tho...lemme know how it turns out...

Well we considered the rain issue, we're going to dig it in an old Chicken coop, that way it is protected from the mass quantities of freshwater a chesapeake summber banger can throw down. We'll typically be out there ever other week to check the chemical levels in the pond, and I think we'll probably dig it at least 3' deep and 10'x10' I'll make sure I take pictures of the whole process as we go, and just as a side not, I'll be Striper fishing lake anna all weekend, just figured I'd rub it in for all of you up north who are still freezing :P

Actually the fresh water might be a good thing . to replace water that evaporates. The only problem I forsee would be getting rid of ammonium and nitrite by 10% water changes. and the establishment of the biological filter. That will take place naturally. If the fish are below the frost line they might even survive the winter.

I keep macks alive in a used lobster tank. I use what is called a point system--it works well, but you need to be pretty close to the ocean.

I used to--i got rid of it. it was a pain to rig it up. There is also no action to the rod. i recommend against getting one.
