New Guy with limited access

Hi Folks,

I've never caught a striper. Nope, not even one. I have added this goal to my bucket list of fishing. I have no intention of stopping at one but you have to start somewhere. My real problem right now is limited access. My boat would be able to handle bay waters on those mirror smooth days, but my total lack of knowledge/experience of boating on big water makes this unwise. Therefore I will be fishing the middle James River, up as far as the Chickahominy.

Will somebody please tell me the better times of year to do this? I have found an amazing LACK of information on this. I think the guy at the bait shop is telling me a fish story. Or mayby he's not.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Some are catching stripers right steady in the james river up toward *** now some up to 26". Catching around *** as well. You can troll or cast and jig around the bridge pilings.
