Default Wells stripers

In about a month my family and I will be spending a week in Wells. Every summer I see guys fishing for stripers (usually surf fishing at night), and every summer I promise myself that I'm going to try it sometime. This year I really do want to do it. But all my fishing experience is in freshwater, and I don't want to spend a lot of money for gear that I may only use once. I also don't know any striper fishermen up there who could let me borrow a rod or help me get started. So what's the quickest, down-and-dirty way to get into a couple stripers in late July in Wells? Can I press an 8' catfish rod into service, either in the surf or from the jetty? And what kind of rig/bait combo? Is there someplace up there that I can buy eel? Bloodworms? Or should I go with an artificial version of one of those? Or something else completely?

Look up Webhannet Bait and Tackle for fresh bait. I believe they rent rods too. Bring the cat rod so you have two lines in the water. Rig them both with bait or cast artificials with one. Bring raingear. When it rains my family hits the outlets and I fish. I'll also get up at 3 or 4 am and fish till 8 or 9 when everyone else is just getting up. Like I said talk to Webhannet B & T, their email is [email protected]. I can't say enough for clams up there from the surf. Especially in nasty weather. Good luck and no regrets this trip. I did the same thing for years until I didn't.
