Thumbs up New Hybrid / Wiper World Line Class Record

This was sent to me from Manny Luftglas "gone fishin for Hybrids"

Dan Hannum gave us permission to publish it.

A week ago someone broke my Nevada State Record. My old record was
18.8.lbs. New record is 22.22 lbs.
Last evening Sunday 7/15/07 at 7:15 pm I hooked the biggest Wiper of my life and got my
record back. It is the New Nevada State Record and New World LineClass record for 12 lb. test.
(Pending)
Lahonton Res.
Wiper
25.38 lbs
36 1/2 inches
27 inch Girth
Caught on a Rapala Shad Rap
12 lb. test line (Stren Magna Thin)

It has been 2 years since I landed one of these beasts. I don't get many of these big ones to hit only about 1 - 2 per year and I have lost my last 4, but this was worth the wait. I custom painted a Rapala Shad Rap to make it look like a young Wiper, and it has worked very well for me this year. Lahonton Reservoir is just loaded with young Wipers. The Division of Wildlife told me that even though the Wiper is a hybrid and is sterile the Wiper has found a way to breed in this lake. There are thousands more then they ever put in this lake. You can go out this year and catch 100 - 200 Wipers in a afternoon of fishing all in the 4 - 6 inch range. This is the first Wiper I have caught at a deeper depth (12 feet), usually I hook them in 2 feet of water. This one hit close to the boat at full speed and the battle was on. For a while I didn't know if I was trying to reel him in or he was trying to pull me closer to him. The fight went on for 22 minutes from close to shore and out almost 200 yards to 68 feet deep. When the fish was finally exhausted my wife was ready with the net. Almost an hour after the fight and as I was having the fish weighed in my hands were still shaking.
Hope you enjoy this and good fishing.

Dan Hannum

Now I'm wondering if that lake does have a viable population of reproducing Hybrids, if it was a hatchery fish or one of the naturals????? How old would that fish have to be? I'm sure the DNR is all over it.

Dan Hannum is my hero! Good Lord! what a piece of fish! That thing would leave me shaking for a week. I am a little surprised he uses a Rapala. I'd worry the hooks would pull out. Nice job! That fish does not look as fat as most of those big critters look. He looks like he's still an active hunter.

Holy cow! that is a PIG. 12 lb huh? My buddy will be glad to hear it was stren. Just curious though does the Wiper bite slow down during the summer months out here? In ohio you can't really buy a bite in the summer. I could not imagine hookin up with that caliber of fish. Congrats again WHAT A FISH!

Here the former record caught two weeks earlier.
Ryle's catch near the Lahontan Dam easily broke Hannum's 2004 record of 18.8 pounds.
His wiper weighed 22.5 pounds and was 32 inches long.

Mike Ryle held it for 15 days.

damn those are fat fish, I wish there was a place to catch these wipers around here! That would be fun through the ice, i'd have to drill a bigger hole though.

Those Nevada puppies must grow year round. I looked up that lake on the map and was surprised to see that it is a small lake that appears to be outside of Reno. What a delight it must be to find fish like that on relatively small water bodies.

No, but I'm out hunting those suckers every week on a lake where the record is 18.4 pounds, and my biggest to date is 8.6. My first goal is a ten pounder, but it is taking years to achieve it. Not to mention hundreds of dollars worth of tackle.
