Default Another freshwater guy checking in...

Hey guys,

My name is Tim and I am powerless over my striper addiction, it is a full blown case of MSOCD (morone saxatilis obsessive compulsive disorder) I no longer expect, let alone desire, to recover!

I caught my first striper about 35 years ago but didn't really get the bug and start focusing on them until about 10 years or so ago. I actually "backed into" striper fishing after being fortunate enough to spend a fair amount of time fishing offshore in SE FL for a few years and needed something closer to home that could make my drag sing. Spent a few years chasing smaller (5-15 lb) fish in the lakes here before I discovered a whole new, to me, variation on this for these wonderful fish in our landlocked rivers. For the last couple of years I've fished these rivers almost exclusively targeting 20+ lb fish using large live baits. I'll post some other pics in the "2008 Fatties" thread later but I'll post a pic of one of the better ones I got this past spring at the bottom of this thread. I've actually had a very productive fishing year with at least one 30lb or better fish coming aboard every month since 12/07.

I also started building my own rods a couple of years ago because I couldn't find what I wanted on the shelf....and like probably most of you...I like to tinker with my tackle...hmmm..that didn't sound quite right! lol I build my rods, my planer boards, my sinkers, and am constantly changing something on either the boat or garage bait tank.

In browsing through the forums I've already seen a few familiar names and suspect there are others around that I haven't run across yet. I look forward to getting to know, and learning from, a lot of you guys.

Thanks for the welcome guys. A virtual round of your choice on me.

Yep, that was a springtime fattie to be sure. We boated 8 fish that day for a total weight in the range of 225 lbs or so as memory serves. Here it's gettin' to be about time for them to start assuming that shape again in a week or two...of course they won't complete the transformation for a while yet. The 19 lb fish from y'day was still in the long and lean mode. Eat fish, eat!!! I choose to read that as they should be chewin' even better and getting heavier soon!

Oh, almost forgot... RickSI....for larger fish I almost exclusively fish large live baits. Skipjack herring whenever I can get them, gizzards and sometimes "rainbow shad". As for artificials, I have have a variety of large swim baits, both commercially made and not, that I use on occassion along with the occassional redifn and pencil popper or a large fin-s-fish/sluggo type bait. Nothing quite like looking down in 5-10 feet of gin clear water and seeing 2 or 3 20+lb stripers checking out your lure 30 feet from the boat!!! I never cease to be amazed at how they can appear out of nowhere even in clear water.
