Default Live bait vs. chunk bait

Does one or the other seem to produce more?

It's all in personal preference, they both produce in certain conditions.

x2

Supposedly the cows are lazy and prefer chunk..... but so do the catfish, perch etc and fishing chunk can be a PIA. On top of that you need to put a new piece on every 10 or 15 minutes so you can go through your 10 herring pretty quickly.

Some years chunks have been far more effective for whatever reason.

x3 to what those guys have to say ...

Some guys will swear by fresh chunk, some prefer only live (like me) ... but i'll cut them up if need be. If anchored up and have mult poles , just mix it up and see what the Stripers want.

If I could only fish one I would choose live. Early in the season I get most on chunk but when the water warms up I seem to only catch them on live.

I use chunk from shore. Tried live herring, but they loved snagging me up in rocks

I prefer live, but think that there might be 2 times that chunk could produce better than live on the upper Hudson: (1) when water is high and off color, and; (2) sometime when schools of herring are in the river real thick.

If you have no problem catching live bait its more convienent but you'll almost never catch me without dead bait. I fish both until I get a clear answer on what's working better, which seems to change any given day. Couldn't tell ya what make them preffere one or the other but I have noticed chunk works better in high, or murky water or rough conditions. I've got just as much confidance with either. Most people have more faith in live bait cuz its the easy way out and its easier to keep a good bait. All to often I see guys chunkin with not so fresh bait. I grab the freshest herring still alive for my chunks. They bleed much more and don't usually get cats n eels as bad when real fresh. Early run I get more bites on chunk and much few cats in april so I don't go through bait that fast until about may. Early season the herring are bigger and the stripers are smaller so I cut 1/3rds then start using halves and whole dead herring once the runs in full swing. I also like big baits specially for live. Seem to get better qaulity bites and less run and drops

I do one of each, with a stoolie on the 3rd line. When the cats are too bothersome I'll switch to two liveys...last year liveys seemed to be the ticket for me. Best wishes with the upcoming season! HH is a fun place to wet a line.

I'm a chunk guy in the early run cause of the murky water but remember to change your chunks every 15 min because sent is a big part of using chunk bait. i also use live but i catch more on chunk through out the season, stay safe and good fishing.
